Telephone Kiosk Saved – December 2008
The Town Council has recently officially sponsored the K6 telephone at Gun Gardens in Frinton on Sea. The kiosk was to have been removed by British Telecom. However, pressure by the Town Council and others across the country lead to a scheme of sponsorship and adoption. For £500 per annum the Town Council has saved this kiosk as a working telephone box. The Town Council received a grant of £250.00 from Tendring District Council towards the first year’s sponsorship. The Town Council also received an offer of a matching £250.00 from the nearby restaurant, “The Last Viceroy of British India” but, unfortunately, sponsorship rules precluded acceptance, As soon as the paperwork has been finalised by British Telecom the Town Council will attempt to bring this historic building up to the Town Council’s usual high standards.
New Sea Wall Footpath in Walton – June 2008
Two years ago, following representations from local people and holiday makers, the Town Council applied to the County Council to have the informal footway from Naze Park Road along Sole Creek and the Mere to North Street designated as an official Public Footpath. This has now been achieved and a valuable new amenity is available to all. The Town Council acknowledges the welcome cooperation of the landowners, the investigative work of the County Council and the assistances of many local witnesses.

Mayor Making 2008/2009
Councillor Terry Allen was elected for a second annual term as Town Mayor at the Annual Meeting of the Town Council on 8 May 2008. The Deputy Mayor, Councillor Robert Bucke was also appointed for a second year. Both Mayor and Deputy thanked their fellow Councillors and the public for their support and pledged to continue to work for the residents of the Town’s area.

Replacement Bus Shelter April 2008
The brick bus shelter at Holland Road, Kirby Cross was demolished by a vehicle manoeuvring nearby some time ago. A new shelter has now been installed, substantially funded by grant from the Essex County Council.

Zig-Zag Seafront Shelter
The much abused Zig-Zag shelter in Frinton is undergoing repair (again) and the tiled roof is now completed. On this occasion repairs benefit from 50% grant from the County Council and additional finance from Tendring District Council.

Update January 2008
The Zig-Zag seafront shelter in Frinton is one of five restored in 2007 with the help of a County Council Grant. The much vandalised condition of this shelter, one of the oldest in the Town’s area, has been a cause for concern locally for several months. A huge amount of work has been devoted to this structure and it is now better than at any time in the last one hundred years.
Precept 2008/2009
The Town Council’s Precept for the forthcoming year is £431,563. This is the amount that the Town Council asks Tendring District to collect from Council Tax payers in the Town’s area to pay for Town Council services. On present information, the Precept will amount to £52.82 pa. for a Band “D” Council Tax payer. In addition to inflation the increase will pay for:
- Walton Market
- Seafront Security Equipment,
- Conservation Areas Management Plan
- Youth Facility Feasibility Study
- Frinton-in-Bloom “gold” bid
10.01.2008.
Grant Approved
The Essex County Council has approved the Town Council’s application for grant of £6305.00 to restore six more seafront shelters. The judging panel met in mid-December and awarded a second grant from the Community Initiatives Fund. The six shelters are in Frinton and Walton and are the last ones requiring substantial work. Tendring District Council has also offered a grant of £1000.00. It is hoped that work will start in April 2007.

Great Holland Gates
Following requests from Great Holland residents the Town Council asked the County Council if the three main entrances to the village could have speed restriction gates installed (as at Kirby Cross). The Essex County Council readily agreed. The design was not easy as verges were almost non-existent in some places. The County Council installed all three sets very recently.

Walton War Memorials
Work has started on restoring the plinth of the main war memorial at Walton. The RAF memorial will also be cleaned as work proceeds. The Town Council had a 50% grant from the Essex County Council’s Community Initiatives Fund plus a grant from Tendring District Council. However, as is so often the case, restoration work revealed previously overlooked problems requiring further work. Something for another day and another budget.
